Former Red Sox minor league lefty eyeing return to pro ball
A member of the Red Sox 2017 “Draft class” is looking to make a return to professional baseball in 2025.
Left-hander Brendan Nail was signed as an undrafted free agent by Boston in 2017 and pitched for sevens seasons in the Red Sox minor league system. Nail threw in a pro day last Saturday in front of major league scouts.
The Western Carolina product made it all the way to Triple-A Worcester, where he put together a decent 26 inning stretch to finish up the 2023 season.
After spending the 2024 season pitching in INDY ball for the Washington WildThings, Nail threw in Tread’s Pro day this past Saturday in an effort to be signed by a professional team.
While spending the season throwing for the WildThings, Nail carried a 2.89 ERA across 18.2 innings pitched. Nail also missed quite a few bats in the short sample size, as he struck out 29 batters in the span good for a 14.0 K/9.
In Nail’s last season with the Red Sox in 2023, he threw a fastball that would range from 90-92 MPH and at times would top out at 94 MPH. The pitch proved to miss bats early on in the low minors and held it’s own when in Triple-A. He also threw a breaking ball that would be mid-70’s that at times would like like a slider, and other times a curveball. The breaking ball would be primarily used when ahead in the count.
