Eduardo Rodriguez and the Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a four-year, $80 million deal, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. The deal includes a vesting option for a fifth year that can escalate the total of the contract to $99 million. The mutual interest between both team and Rodriguez was first reported by Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
Rodriguez spent the last two seasons with the Tigers before opting out of his contract at the end of the season. This past year, the southpaw posted a 3.30 ERA/3.66 FIP with 48 walks and 143 strikeouts over 152 2/3 frames (26 starts).
The Venezuelan native signed a five-year, $77 million deal with Detroit following the 2021 season. The deal included a 10-team no-trade clause.
At this past years trade deadline, Rodriguez invoked his no-trade rights after the Tigers and Dodgers agreed to a deal for the lefty. The deal would have netted Detroit prospects and given the Dodgers a much needed starter for their playoffs.
The Diamondbacks have familiarity in the southpaw with ties to his days when he was with the Boston Red Sox. General manager Mike Hazen was a member of the Red Sox front office when Rodriguez was acquired by Boston in 2014 for Andrew Miller.
