Former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick interviews for vacant UNC job
Could former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s next job not be with an NFL franchise?
It’s quite possible, as the future Hall of Fame coach interviewed for the vacant North Carolina job, according to Inside Carolina. The six-time Super Bowl champion head coach and the Patriots mutually agreed to part ways on Jan. 11, 2024, after New England stumbled to a 4-13 record, the team's worst in his 24 seasons as head coach.
Adam Carter of The News & Observer confirmed the report, adding that Belichick “blew them away in the interview” and that the 72-year-old’s interest in the job is “high and genuine.”
It doesn’t appear that interest is mutual.
Carter reported Belichick is “extremely unlikely” to land the job “due to his age and lack of college experience.” The reporter speculated that “about two or three dozen candidates would have to say no before this had any real chance of going anywhere.”
According to MassLive’s Karen Guregian’s sources the interest from Belichick and UNC may only be cosmetic at this point
During the offseason, Belichick interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, but they ultimately went with Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. The 49ers and Rams both offered Belichick spots on their coaching staff, but he turned them down.
Once the NFL season comes to an end, Belichick will have a handful of potential landing spots that may include Chicago Bears opening, the Jaguars if they part ways with head coach Doug Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke, a return to the Giants or possibly working alongside Jerry Jones in Dallas.
This season, Belichick has worked in the media, joining “The Pat McAfee Show” for their NFL coverage around the draft and currently works for Underdog Fantasy, ESPN, The CW Network, and other outlets.
