Former Bruins forward fined for dangerous hit
Former Bruins forward Garnet Hathaway was fined by the NHL Department of Player Safety following a dangerous hit on Blue Jackets forward Zach Werenski.
The play happened when Werenski was playing the puck behind his own net. Hathaway looked like he was attempting to break up the play but instead connected on a scary knee-on-knee collision with Werenski.
Hathaway was given a 2-minute minor penalty for the hit.
“Philadelphia’s Garnet Hathaway has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Kneeing Columbus’ Zach Werenski,” the league’s official account posted on X.
The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The 31-year-old split time between the Capitals and Bruins last season. Boston acquired him along with defenseman Dmitry Orlov prior to the NHL trade deadline.
During his time with the Bruins, the Kennebunkport, Maine native was used in numerous different line combinations by head coach Jim Montgomery.
The 6-foot-3 forward was an imposing presence on the Bruins bottom-six lines following the trade. He ultimately left his past offseason after signing a two-year, $4.75 million deal with the Flyers. His deal with Philadelphia will carry a $2.2375 million AAV.
