Fenway Park Opening Series against the Twins
Red Sox drop the home opener, will look to rebound, pitching matchups inside
Another Fenway home opener has come and gone, and this home opener was definitely a roller coaster ride. The game started with a dropped pop fly to left field and was anything but fun for the rest of the game.
Nick Pivetta was on the bump today and really struggled today giving up his third home run of this season. Pivetta threw over 50 pitches in just two innings finishing with 5Hs and 4ERs.
While Pivetta struggled on the mound the offense had its own struggles recording just one run through the first seven innings coming off a Alex Verdugo solo shot.
The offense continues to struggle with runners on base, putting two on with one out in back-to-back innings. The offense finally found a little hope after Rafael Devers hit a two-run bomb in the 8th inning.
Any chance at a comeback was spoiled after Matt Barnes returns the two runs, giving up two walks and loading the bases.
Red Sox and Twins pitching matchups
The second game of this series will feature Sonny Gray facing off against Tanner Houck. Gray comes into this game off a 4 2/3 inning 4 H and 2 ER performance in his season debut last week.
His numbers all-time against the Red Sox fair pretty well in our favor with a 1-6 record; Gray has a 6.64 ERA with 37 Ks in his 9 appearances with his last coming in 2018.
Easter Sunday will provide us with Bailey Ober going up against Michael Wacha who made his Red Sox debut last week. Ober will be coming off a week of rest after he went 5.0 innings giving up 4 Hs and 4 ERs. Very different from Gray, Ober has only seen the Sox once in his career. In his lone start, he went 5.0 innings giving up no runs on 4Hs recording 7Ks in last year’s matchup.
The series finale gives us Dylan Bundy facing Rich Hill. The Sox will look to write a different narrative this outing for Bundy who is coming off a strong season debut going 5.0 innings and only giving up one hit. Bundy in his career really has been owned by the bats of Boston having a record of 3-9 with a 5.58 ERA and 66 Ks in his 20 appearances. His last outing only went 1.2 innings long giving up 1 H and 2 ERs.
The Red Sox will look to flip the narrative of the home opener in this four-game series that contains Easter Sunday and Marathon Monday.
