Enmanuel Valdez with an two-run RBI double in exhibition win versus Northeastern
The Red Sox hosted Northeastern at JetBlue Park on Friday.
The two teams played their annual exhibition game before the Sox begin spring training play.
Boston defeated Northeastern 5-3 in seven innings.
Enmanuel Valdez had a two-run RBI double in the bottom of the first to break the game wide open at 5-0.
Valdez is likely to start with Triple-A Worcester to begin the season, but will get opportunities all in the infield to try and make the Opening Day roster.
Manager Alex Cora on Thursday told reporters that the 24-year-old will see time at second base and third this spring.
“He can (play outfield) but I think here, we’ll move him around in the infield,” Cora said. When asked if Valdez will play shortstop, Cora replied, “we’ll see, we’ll see.”
The Red Sox are excited for what Valdez can offensively for them in the future.
“He can hit,” said Cora.
“This kid, he can hit. He controls the strike zone. He can hit. So we’ll try to help him defensively. More comfortable at second than other places. Both of them, Abreu and Valdez, they control the strike zone. They do damage in the strike zone. I’m excited to see them. They’re both going to start in West Palm next week.”
