Don Orsillo left out of Jerry Remy’s pre-game tribute
Last night the Red Sox honored the late Jerry Remy from Fenway Park. The Red Sox would bring in former team legends, NESN sideline reporters and others who worked in the booth with Remy. Unfortunately there was one man who did not partake in the festivities.
Former NESN announcer Don Orsillo who worked with Remy from 2001-2015 was not present in any form on Wednesday. Orsillo was calling the Padres and Reds game so he was not able to be at Fenway Park. He did not have a virtual presence either for the event.
Orsillo tweeted that he originally was asked to record a video for the Remy tribute. However, he was later told by the Red Sox and NESN that video would no longer be needed.
“I was offered the opportunity to do a video message for my friend and former partner Jerry Remy for tonight’s ceremony at Fenway Park,” Orsillo wrote. “Sadly, I was notified by Red Sox/NESN that my video would no longer be needed for tonight’s ceremony.”
Orsillo would share a screen shot of a tweet he prepared instead for Remy. The confusion and fan outcry began to spread on social media like wildfire.
The Boston Globe’s Chad Finn would tweet “seems like an unfortunate miscommunication more than anything else.” There has been no formal announcement from the Red Sox or NESN as to why Orsillo was not part of Remy’s tribute.
The Red Sox and NESN not having Orsillo in any capacity part of Remy’s tribute is a complete travesty. Orsillo and Remy were an iconic duo and incredibly important to Red Sox history. They were part of our lives every night while we watched the Sox during the dog days of summer.
It’s insulting to Orsillo, Remy and the fans that he was not part of the tribute. Shame on the Red Sox.
Here’s the 19 minute tribute to Remy.
