Dodgers acquire starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow from the Rays in a four-player trade, then will extend him to new contract
The ink was barely dry on Shohei Ohtani’s new contract before the Dodgers swung a trade to strengthen their roster even more.
Los Angeles acquired right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Manuel Margot from the Rays, in exchange for right-handed starter Ryan Pepiot and outfield prospect Jonny Deluca, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Glasnow’s market began to pick up over the last few weeks, despite injuries limiting the righty the last few seasons. This past season, he tossed a career high 120 innings, striking out 162 batters, while walking 37 and posting a 10-7 record with a 3.53 ERA.
The Southern Calf. native is now expected to extend Glasnow to a five-year, $135 million deal, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The new deal will include a $10 million signing bonus this year and a $30 million club option for 2028.
If the Dodgers decline the club option, Glasnow will have a $20 million player option. There is reportedly no deferred money in his new deal.
Glasnow joined the Rays after a trade with the Pirates at the 2018 MLB trade deadline. When on the mound, the righty offers an electric fastball and dominates hitters.
The 30-year-old has dealt with injuries during his career, including left oblique injuries and underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021.
He will now join a Dodgers rotation that’ll feature Walker Buehler, Ryan Yarbrough, Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan. Los Angeles is now connected to prized Japanese starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto and could bring back Clayton Kershaw. The veteran southpaw is currently recovering from left shoulder surgery.
