Derek Jeter sends personal message to Red Sox prospect Jeter Downs before his Major League debut
Red Sox prospect Jeter Downs made his major league debut on Wednesday at Fenway Park. The 24-year-old infielder earned the start at third base as manager Alex Cora gave Rafael Devers the day off.
Prior to the game, Yankees legend Derek Jeter tweeted at Downs congratulating him and wishing him good luck.

The Red Sox rookie didn’t see Jeter’s tweet until after the game. Once he saw the tweet, he was fired up, like most people would be getting a personal message from a baseball great.

“Somebody just showed it to me,” Downs told reporters after the game. “That’s pretty cool. I met him a few years ago and to have him tweet that out, he was my idol growing up, named after him of course. Literally, I watched every single game I could when he was playing, the way he went about his business. That was super cool. I thank him for that.”
Downs stint with the Red Sox was short lived, he was on the roster for the Tigers series and was optioned back to the WooSox on Thursday. Downs went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts batting out of the nine spot of the lineup.
