Big Papí took pictures and signed autographs for the high school players on the field. He also was part of the first pitch ceremony.
Ortiz wasn’t the only one to make an appearance for Opening Day, he was joined by former Red Sox pitcher Oil Can Boyd, former PawSox manager Joe Morgan, Red Sox radio broadcaster Joe Castiglione and former competitor on the voice Cara Brindisi, who sung the National Anthem.
Celtics legend Bob Cousy was also present and spoke to the crowd before saying the two most iconic words in baseball, “play ball.”
The WooSox ushered in the new season with an explosive win over the Syracuse Mets 11-2. Daniel Palka, Greg Allen and David Hamilton all hit homers to led the team offensively. Allen had three hits and three RBIs in the game, while reliever Jake Faria earned his first win as a member of the WooSox.
After the game WooSox manager Chad Tracy told Beyond the Monster, “We have a lot of power and guys who are fast… and also if you make a mistake they can pop you. It was all around outstanding.”
Tracy also mentioned with the elements on the field he was impressed with the way the players took care of the baseball on the field. The WooSox made no errors in the win.
