David Hamilton 'tapping into power more frequently' for WooSox
David Hamilton has not disappointed this year for the WooSox as he enters his first full season in the Red Sox organization. The speed comes as advertised and anyone will notice it once you watch him play. The power in the bat has started to come through in the 2023 season.
WooSox manager Chad Tracy has noticed the upward trend of power.
“I mean maybe I am a little bit surprised.” Tracy said about the power Hamilton has displayed. “Let’s not forget he hit 14 or 15 home runs last year, so I knew there was some pop in there. You don’t hit that many home runs and not have some power. I think he is tapping into it even more frequently than before.”
Hamilton has nine home runs so far this year in 144 at-bats. 18 of his 39 hits this season have gone for extra base hits. He is currently on pace to have career highs in home runs and extra base hits. His OPS sits at .884, which is his highest OPS since his sophomore year at the University of Texas.
The former Texas Longhorn hit a clutch go-ahead home run on Thursday night to put the WooSox ahead in the eighth inning. Worcester has had some wind blowing this week towards the walls, but Thursday’s home run didn’t need any help from Mother Nature.
“That ball on Thursday night was dead central on a line.” Tracy commented about the clutch home run. “I know the wind was blowing out a little bit, but that ball was on a line out to center field. So yeah, he has some thump in that bat.”
It will be interesting to see the direction the Red Sox take with Hamilton as the months go by. We have seen him play second base, shortstop, and center field for a game so far in Worcester.
