David Hamilton has big Opening Day for the WooSox: 'It was fun to come out here for the first time and play'
David Hamilton is known for his elite speed and the ability to steal bases. He stole 70 bases for Double-A Portland last season, setting a new organization record. On Friday, Hamilton made his Triple-A debut and surprise, surprise, he stole his first base of the season.
“First things first, you just got to get on base,” Hamilton said after the game. “Whether it’s by hit or walk, you got to do that first and rest will take care of itself.”
The 25-year-old was aggressive last season on the base paths and he expects himself to be the same way this year with the WooSox.
Hamilton’s first stolen base came immediately in the first inning following a single to get on base.
Hamilton also showed off another part of his game by belting his first homer of the 2023 campaign. The two-run homer came in the bottom of the third inning on a 2-1 pitch that scored Jarren Duran and gave Worcester the lead.
“It was fun, it was good. It’s always good to hit home runs, it felt good, I definitely liked it,” Hamilton said.
The speedy infielder has the ability to go-deep in games, he hit 12 homers last season with the Sea Dogs. Its another dynamic to his overall skillset that will help eventually elevate himself to Boston.
Hamilton’s performance caught the eye of his skipper, “it was outstanding today,” said WooSox manager Chad Tracy after the game.
“Hammy hit a dozen last year, so there’s pop in there,” added Tracy.
Hamilton went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, the stolen base and one run scored. With the excitement and pressure of Opening Day under his belt, Hamilton emphasized postgame how much fun he had on Friday.
“It felt good, I like Worcester, I like the team, I like the people and facilities, I like the city. It was fun to come out here for the first time and play,” said Hamilton.
