Could fast-rising Red Sox prospect Kristian Campbell earn September promotion?
Red Sox fast-rising prospect Kristian Campbell has been red-hot since joining the WooSox this week. He’s also hit at every other level he’s been at within the Sox’ system this season.
With September call-ups just days away, the Red Sox could look to add the versatile Campbell to their big league roster.
“We’ve been talking about it, and obviously versatility comes into play,” Cora said Saturday. “We’re very left-handed, too. So trying to create balance. The whole utility-fast guy comes into play, too. So we’ve been talking about it for a few weeks.”
The right-handed hitting Campbell would give the Red Sox another much-needed righty off the bench with the ability to play second base, shortstop, and center field. This season, he has appeared in 34 games at second base, 25 at shortstop, 24 in center field, and two games at third base.
On Sunday, prior to the series finale with the DBacks, skipper Alex Cora was asked about the possibility of Campbell earning another promotion this season.
“We talk about what he’s doing, but not in this situation,” Cora said.
Campbell, joined the Sox’ system after he was drafted out of Georgia Tech during last year’s amateur draft. Since joining the WooSox, Campbell has been scorching hot, going 8-for-19 (.421) with two homers, one triple, nine RBI, and three runs in his first four games.
His two homers came in the same game on Friday night.
Between High-A Greenville, Double-A Portland, and his cup of coffee with Triple-A Worcester, Campbell is hitting .343 with a .445 on-base percentage, .583 slugging percentage, 1.028 OPS, 18 homers, 31 doubles, three triples, 69 RBI, 80 runs, and 21 stolen bases (100 games).
Cora told reporters that the club intends to use one of their additional roster spots on a position player and the other on a pitcher. If Campbell doesn’t get the nod on Sept. 1, he could be added during the middle of the month.
