At last year's trade deadline, the Red Sox added a few prospects with upside in deals with the Padres and Astros as they improved their depth in the minors. One of those prospects was Corey Rosier, who is currently in Double-A Portland. The UNC Greensboro product is off to an impressive start offensively this season and standing out in a system full of talent.
Through 36 games, Rosier has been on fire at the plate with a .308 batting average in 120 at-bats. The Portland outfielder has created problems for opposing pitchers with his speed whenever he reaches base. He has stolen 22 stolen bases this season after setting a career-high in steals last year with 40. While Rosier has become comfortable in his new surroundings, he had to quickly pack up his life less than a year ago.
“In the middle of the year, getting traded was kind of wild,” said Rosier. I packed my car and drove nine hours in a day, and that was very interesting.”
How Rosier learned about the trade adds an even more unique twist to his story.
“The Padres had already made a bigger trade a day earlier involving Juan Soto, so I was sitting in the locker room reading up on that,” said Rosier. “Then one of those fan pages commented on one of my pictures on Instagram and said welcome to Boston. So, I was looking at that like, huh, that’s interesting. Then my manager called me into his office and told me it was true.”
Now that Rosier is settled in, he has been one of the Sea Dogs' best hitters. The 2021 draftee is getting on base at a high rate and showing some power with 11 extra-base hits. In May, he recorded five multi-hit games and credited some of his success to how he was welcomed to the organization.
"I think anytime you're comfortable somewhere, going to a new place and trying to learn the staff and organization can be challenging, said Rosier. "A lot of people in the organization were super welcoming and told me to reach out if I ever needed anything. That was super helpful."
While the season is far from over, Rosier is one Red Sox prospect to watch. The Maryland native has shown no signs of slowing down and built on his success in spring training.
“I think being able to go through spring training with the Sox is what really made me comfortable and got me prepared for a good season,” said Rosier.
