Corey Kluber scoreless debut: Greg Allen, Triston Casas power Red Sox offense to 7-2 win over Marlins
The Red Sox took a two and a half hour bus ride to Jupiter to face the Miami Marlins Tuesday night. The bus ride back to Fort Myers will be a happy one, as Red Sox pitching kept the game in sight as the Red Sox offense clubbed two home-runs and put up seven runs.
It would be the Spring debut for Corey Kluber in a Red Sox uniform. Kluber pitched two scoreless innings and handled the pitch clock well in his first game pitching with the new rule. The veteran is going to be heavily relied on in the MLB rotation this year.
Off-season signing Greg Allen had a game to remember this Spring, as he went 3-3 with two doubles out of the lead-off spot. Allen finds himself on the outside looking in of the current MLB roster.
Triston Casas gave the Red Sox offense a comfortable lead they wouldn’t look back on with a lefty-on-lefty crime in the top of the fifth.
I’m sure it’s not a coincidence Casas stayed in to face a couple lefties in the game, as they would love for him to see as many as possible during the Spring.
Ryan Fitzgerald continues his Grapefruit League tear with another 2-2 night with 2 RBIs. He is hitting .571 so far this Spring and continues his hot streak dating back to last year in Spring Training.
A name a little under the radar on securing a spot on the Red Sox roster is Enmanuel Valdez. Valdez has hit the ball pretty hard this Spring and should factor into a pretty tough decision for a middle infield position coming into the season.
There were a few more notables in the Red Sox lineup on Tuesday. Bobby Dalbec went 1-3 with a double over the right fielders head. Raimel Tapia went 0-3 as he is fighting for a roster spot as the bench outfielder. Jorge Alfaro went 2-4 in what could be some of his last action before taking off for the WBC. Connor Wong went 1-3 with an RBI and Rob Refsnyder went 0-1.
