Confident new Patriots wide receiver Javon Baker: 'Bring your popcorn. I make people in wheelchairs stand up’
New Patriots wide receiver Javon Baker certainly doesn’t lack confidence. New England selected Baker No. 110 overall in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.
After being selected by the Patriots, Baker went on Instagram Live and went off on the rest of the league for not drafting him.
“Took too (expletive) long. They gotta pay,” Baker said. “They gotta pay. They gotta pay. They gotta pay. You took too long. You took too (expletive) long.”
Following his IG Live, Baker met with the New England media, and he was asked about his recently posted video and his mentality after feeling like he was passed on in the draft.
“Mentality is just kill whoever is on the other side of me,” Baker said. “That’s really the Mamba mentality. That’s it.”
Baker was also asked about his ‘game’ when he takes the field for the Patriots, and the confident receiver says he’s planning on putting on a show at Gillette Stadium.
“Just come to the home stadium and bring out popcorn. That’s all I can tell you all,” Baker said. “Bring your popcorn. I make people in wheelchairs stand up. Bring your popcorn.”
Baker began his collegiate career in Tuscaloosa. The former Alabama wide out spent two years playing for Nick Sagan before initially transferring to Kentucky, but then he switched to the University of Central Florida.
In his first year playing for UCF, he caught 56 passes for 796 yards and five touchdowns. Last year, he earned First Team All-Big 12 honors after catching 52 passes for 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns.
Baker now comes to New England with a chip on his shoulder, looking to prove the entire NFL wrong for passing on him in the draft.
“Honestly, there’s going to always be a chip on my shoulder, no matter what,” Baker said. “I’m self-driven. I know how it feels to be behind somebody. I know how it feels to be at the bottom of the depth chart. I’m always going to have a chip on my shoulder, regardless.”
