During the 2023 campaign, the Red Sox farm system provided reasons for optimism. While the Red Sox finished six games under .500 at the major league level, prospects such as Roman Anthony, Wikelman Gonzalez, and Chase Meidroth saw their stock rise. Another player who took his game to another level is Christopher Troye.
In his third year in the Red Sox’s system, Troye posted a career-low 3.10 ERA while splitting time between two levels. The California native held opponents to a .169 batting average in 49.1 innings. Troye continued to improve as his workload increased and ended the season two calls from the majors.
Additionally, the 24-year-old showed that he had swing-and-miss stuff. After striking out 50 batters last season, he struck out a career-high 87 during the 2023 campaign. Following his promotion to Portland in May, Troye frustrated hitters with 50 strikeouts in 31 innings of work during his first taste of Double-A action.
Due to his performance in 2023, the talented right-hander is no longer flying under the radar. He set career highs in multiple categories. That included innings pitched, appearances, wins, and holds. The majority of his success came against advanced competition.
Although the minor league season is over, Troye is not taking any time off. He is one of the Red Sox prospects playing in the Arizona Fall League. In one appearance so far, he has allowed one earned run while striking out two batters.
When spring training rolls around, Troye will be in a different position than last year. After ending the season in Double-A, he could start the 2024 campaign in Portland. However, his time there could be short-lived if he continues to improve. Regardless of what the future holds, Troye is now on more people's radar than ever before.
