Christian Vázquez has built an impressive postseason resume
The Houston Astros made history in Game Four of the World Series on Wednesday night. With the Phillies holding a 2-1 series lead, Houston needed a dominating night on the mound. They got that from Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero, and Ryan Pressley, who threw a combined no-hitter. Behind the plate was Christian Vázquez, who made history of his own.
The 32-year-old became the second catcher in MLB history to receive a no-hitter in a World Series game. The only other player in MLB history to accomplish that feat is Yogi Berra who did it in 1956. While that is reason enough to make it an unforgettable night, Vázquez’s didn’t stop rewriting the record books there.
Additionally, he became the first player in MLB history to catch a World Series no-hitter and have a playoff walk-off home run on his resume. While he has had to split playing time behind the plate, that unique accomplishment shows just how critical the Puerto Rican native has been on the game’s biggest stage.
Through 30 playoff games, Vazquez's numbers don't jump off the page. He has only posted a .247 batting average with ten runs batted in. His best postseason run so far came in 2021 when he hit .281 in 11 games for the Red Sox. Coincidentally the Red Sox were eliminated in the ALCS by the Astros that season.
Astros’ Christian Vázquez catches second no-hitter in World Series history
While the last page of Vázquez's story has yet to be written, his name is forever etched in the history books. His focus now turns to helping the Astros bring a title back to Houston and adding another title to his resume.
Regardless over the remainder of the series, Vázquez can now say he is part of two unforgettable playoff moments for two different cities. That's more than most get in their career.
