Christian Arroyo taking reps at third base this spring
Arroyo has played 43 career games at the hot corner
Christian Arroyo is entering into his third season with the Red Sox. During his time in Boston, Arroyo has played the majority of the time at second base with a few games at shortstop sprinkled in and one at first base. On Tuesday, Arroyo took reps at thrid base and could provide additional depth in the infield this upcoming season.
Arroyo has the ability to add additional versatility to the Red Sox roster this season. The current second baseman will split some time with Kiké Hernández at times this season. However, Hernández will likely spend the majority of his time this season in center field.
Arroyo played a career high 57 games last season, 51 at second base. The Red Sox experimented with Arroyo at first base but he got hurt in his only game there last season. The experiment only last 2 innings when the infielder suffered a left hamstring strain after doing a split to secure a throw by Hernández. Arroyo would land on the IL for the third time of the season.
The 26-year-old has spent 98 days on the IL during his time in Boston. Arroyo has the ability to be a versatile piece for the Sox, however, he can’t consistently stay healthy enough.
Back when the Red Sox claimed Arroyo off waviers, SoxProspects.com wrote that in the field he was “plus defender at third base and second base. Fringe-average defender at shortstop, but can serve as an emergency backup there.”
The Red Sox have been experimenting with moving players all over the diamond during the beginning of camp. While the rookies were together prior to the end of the lockout, Alex Binelas and Blaze Jordan worked out over at first base. Boston is looking to make their players as versatile as possible while they build their roster for this year and beyond.
