Chris Sale is ready for his first start of the season, looking to put the last few years behind him
The Red Sox made a surprise decision during spring training by not announcing Chris Sale as their Opening Day starter. Instead, the honor went to Corey Kluber and Sale was told he’d take the ball for the second game of the season.
Sale was a spectator for Opening Day as his fellow teammates fell short to the Orioles 10-9 on Thursday. Despite the Sox dropping the season opener, Sale told his teammates one important thing, that he will be ready.
Sale missed the first 87 games of last season with a right rib stress fracture while throwing in the offseason. His injury riddled season continued the he suffered a left fifth finger fracture in his second start back. The lefty was hit by a 106.7 mph comeback against the Yankees. There was optimism he could return before the end of the season, that was dashed when he broke his right wrist in a bicycle accident in August.
All of those injuries are now behind Sale who will look to close that chapter of his career this year.
Only time will tell is Sale will return back to the vintage “Chris Sale” fans are accustomed too. It’s been a while since Sale has been healthy and pitching in meaningful games for Boston. His road to redemption begins on Saturday.
