For Chris Murphy, the last few weeks have been full of firsts. The talented lefthander has split time between Triple-A and the majors as the Red Sox pitching staff has dealt with injuries. During that span, he has checked a few things off his bucket list, such as his first MLB appearance and Fenway strikeout. While Murphy’s sample size is small, he has wasted no time making an impact in the majors.
In eight innings of work, the 25-year-old has struck out 11 batters and only allowed four hits. So far, opponents are hitting .138 against him and struggling to make hard contact. Murphy has not only posted impressive numbers but made history three outings into his Red Sox career.
After adding another scoreless appearance to his resume on Saturday afternoon, Murphy became the first pitcher ever to throw two-plus scoreless innings in each of his first three MLB appearances. He has shown excellent control against the Guardians, Yankees, and White Sox and thrived in his new role.
When the 2023 campaign began, Murphy was in the WooSox’s rotation. After posting an 8.35 ERA through his first nine starts, he was moved to the bullpen to work on his control. The move is paying off as the former sixth-round pick has been a different pitcher as a reliever. His success has also caught the eye of manager Alex Cora.
“Early in the season, he didn’t throw enough strikes as a starter,” Cora told reporters following Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Yankees on June 18th. “He was throwing 95 pitches in four innings. And when we made the transition, he’s been consistent in the strike zone. The present is now.”
As the season continues, Murphy will get plenty of opportunities to continue his recent success. The lefty has shown the ability to provide the Red Sox with bulk innings regardless of the opponent. That will be valuable as the Wild Card chase heats up in the second half.
The Red Sox couldn’t have asked for a better start from Murphy, as he has been a bright spot whenever he toes the rubber.
