For the first few weeks of the season, the Bruins were without the services of Charlie McAvoy. While they still found ways to win, other players had to step. On November 10th, the former BU star returned to the lineup and has provided a reminder of just how good he is.
Through eight games, McAvoy has ten points, including eight assists. The former first-round pick has four multi-point games in that stretch. Despite missing the first few weeks of the season, he leads all Bruins defensemen in points and assists.
With the Bruins off to their best start in recent memory, their number-one defenseman is playing a key role. In 181 minutes of total ice time, McAvoy has landed 15 hits and blocked seven assists. While he is averaging a little more than a point per game, the Long Beach native has made an impact every time he steps on the ice.
Additionally, he has already made history less than two months into the season. On November 19th, the former 14th overall pick had four assists. Only three other defensemen have accomplished that feat in franchise history. The list includes Bobby Orr, Glen Wesley, and Ray Bourque.
As McAvoy has etched his way into the history books, he has raised his level of play against playoff contenders. In the Bruins last three games, they have faced the Lightning, Panthers, and Hurricanes. In that span, he has three points, including one goal.
While the season is far from over, McAvoy has shown that the 2022-2023 campaign may be one of his best. He already has one game-winning goal and five points on the man advantage. That clutch play is what the Bruins need from their franchise defenseman.
On Tuesday, he will get to add to his season totals as the Bruins look to continue their winning ways.
