Catcher Stephen Scott drawing positive reviews from Red Sox pitchers
The 2024 season will mark just the third year of coming into spring training with ambitions of having full time catching duties for Red Sox prospect Stephen Scott.
While he did end up playing first base for 12 games, he was primarily used as a catcher and received a non-roster invite to big league spring training as a catcher. While Scott has always been known as a bat-first catcher, one might be surprised to hear about the love the Vanderbilt product received.
'“Scotty was my favorite catcher to throw to last year in Worcester.” Former Red Sox pitcher Jake Faria said. “He followed the scouting report so well. We were on the same page every single time I threw to him, and he knew what I liked to throw no matter the situation. I had some of my best outings last year when he was behind the plate.”
Scott will never be known as a defensive catcher and I think he would be the first person to tell you that, but the fact that numerous pitchers in the Red Sox system have gone out of their way talking about how much they enjoy pitching to him, that counts for something.
“We were on the same page right from the start.” Red Sox lefty Zach Penrod said after throwing to him during the exhibition game against Northeastern. “The pitch calling was spot on even for a brief outing.”
Penrod struck out the side in that game he threw to Scott. While it was against a college team, Penrod had never thrown to Scott previously and it’s a positive sign that so many pitchers in the Red Sox system feel comfortable with him behind the plate.
