Cape League roundup: June 29
Orleans throws no-no, Moylan breaks out and Hyannis holds off Wareham to continue impressive run
Firebirds 4, Anglers 0
Bryce Warrecker, Josh Allen and Chris Clark combined to throw a no-hitter as Orleans blanked Chatham on Wednesday night.
Warrecker (2-0) struck out seven across six innings to pick up the win, Allen struck out three in two innings of relief and Clark worked around a walk and a hit batsman to strike out a pair in the ninth.
Luke Keaschall led Orleans with three hits, while Logan Beard and Garret Guillemette each had two. Kevin Sim added a two-run home run, his fourth blast of the season.
The A’s are now just 2-7-1 across their last 10 games and have been held scoreless in back-to-back contests.
Braves 7, Mariners 6
Josh Moylan had a night remember as Bourne rallied late to edge Harwich at Doran Park.
Moylan was a triple shy of the cycle and hit a walk-off two-run double to snap the Bravos’ three-game losing streak. He drove in five of Bourne’s seven runs and bumped his average up to .200 after going 0-for-10 through his first three games.
The Mariners did most of their damage in the fifth inning, striking for five runs. A two-RBI triple from Tommy Seidl and an RBI double from former Brave Nick Goodwin headlined the charge, but Bourne reliever Seth Keener (1-0) stopped the bleeding, working 4 1/3 innings of one-hit ball to earn the win.
Harbor Hawks 5, Commodores 1
Jackson Baumeister pitched four no-hit innings and the offense struck for three insurance runs in the top of the ninth as Hyannis cruised past Falmouth to extend its unbeaten streak to seven games.
Baumeister walked two and struck out seven while earning a no-decision. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the eighth before Christian Moore walked with the bases loaded, Nolan Schanuel hit a sacrifice fly and Rocco Peppi had an RBI single in the ninth to give reliever Jordy Allard (2-0) the win.
Andrew Pinckney hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh for the ‘Dores, who have now lost four straight.
Whitecaps 3, Gatemen 2
Brewster warded off a late rally to escape with a win against Wareham at Spillane Field.
The Gatemen showed life beginning in the eighth, as Bryan Padilla hit a solo homer to lead off the inning to cut the Caps’ lead in half. Reliever John West stayed composed, though, getting the next three batters to fly out before turning things over to Patrick Copen in the ninth. Copen gave up two hits, but struck out three to escape the jam en route to his second save of the season.
David Mendham had a pair of hits for Brewster, and Carson Demartini added a solo home run. In addition to Padilla, Hogan Windish also went deep for Wareham.
Kettleers 4, Red Sox 1
Five pitchers combined to allow just one run on five hits as Cotuit bested Y-D to remain well atop the West Division.
Kenya Huggins (1-0) matched starter Christian Little’s three innings with three of his own to pick up the win. The right-hander surrendered just one hit and one walk while striking out four. After brief appearances out of the bullpen by Mark McLaughlin and Ben Johnson, TJ Brock went 1 1/3 no-hit innings to secure his third save.
Chandler Simpson went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs for the Ketts, and Tyler Johnson added two RBIs. Meanwhile, Chase Meidroth homered and Hunter Haas chipped in two hits for Yarmouth-Dennis.
