Cape League roundup: June 26
Y-D pitching staff baffles Falmouth, Campos clears the bases to headline six-run inning and Sullivan shuts down Wareham as part of 10-game day on Cape
Red Sox 4, Commodores 0 (Game 2)
Connor Markl put together six stunning innings as Y-D blanked Falmouth in the finale of the teams’ doubleheader.
Markl (1-0) allowed a leadoff single to Alex Mooney and then went on to retire 17 of the next 18 batters he faced to close his outing. The left-hander surrendered just one walk in addition to Mooney’s hit while striking out eight.
The Red Sox wasted no time getting on the board, as Luke Franzoni drove in two runs with a single to center field in the bottom of the first. Chase Meidroth added some insurance with a sacrifice fly in the third, and Cole Carrigg scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Yarmouth-Dennis has found a nice groove as of late, winning four straight games.
Whitecaps 6, Braves 1 (Game 1)
Ryan Lasko went a perfect 3-for-3 and five different players drove in a run as Brewster comfortably got past Bourne in the first game of a twinbill.
The Caps struck for two runs in the second, third and fourth inning to snap a three-game losing skid. Starter Joseph Mancini (1-0) held the lead, allowing just one run through five two-hit innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Jack Hurley plated the Bravos’ only run of the game, doubling home Matt Shaw in the fourth. Hurley went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Gatemen 6, Mariners 5 (Game 2)
Ryan Campos hit a grand slam as a part of a six-run second inning as Wareham topped Harwich to snap a three-game losing streak.
Bryan Padilla added an RBI single and Michael Robertson walked with the bases loaded in what was a nightmarish frame for Mariners starter Wyatt Scotti (0-2), who allowed all six runs.
Tommy Seidl went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs, and Nick Goodwin had two hits for Harwich. Chris Newell also hit a two-run homer. Michael Walsh (1-0) recorded the win, and Cameron Weston notched a six-out save.
Harbor Hawks 7, Anglers 3 (Game 1)
Tito Flores had three RBIs and the offense teed off on opposing starter Carson Whisenhunt as Hyannis soared past Chatham in a seven-inning contest.
Whisenhunt (1-2) got shelled, allowing seven runs on eight hits in just four innings. He did strike out seven, but also walked two. The Hawks jumped on him early, putting up four runs in the second thanks in large part to Flores’ two-out, two-RBI double.
Caden Grice’s third-inning blast brought in two of the Anglers’ three runs after Dominic Tamez had an RBI double an inning prior.
Red Sox 4, Commodores 1 (Game 1)
Jared Lyons fanned 12 and pitched six shutout innings as Y-D bested Falmouth at Red Wilson Field.
Lyons (2-0) allowed just one hit and two walks and has yet to allow a run through 15 innings of work this season. He’s also surrendered just five hits while striking out 22.
Luke Franzoni broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a two-RBI double and came around to score on Jack Costello’s RBI base hit. Y-D added one more run in the eighth and the ‘Dores scored their only run in the seventh on Brayden Taylor’s solo home run.
Kettleers 7, Firebirds 3 (Game 1)
Brooks Baldwin went 3-for-3 and Jackson Kelly continued his dominance on the mound as Cotuit beat Orleans in game one of a day-night doubleheader.
Baldwin also scored a run and had an RBI, and Kelly (2-0) allowed just four hits, one run, one walk and struck out six through 4 2/3 innings. Tyler Johnson also hit his second home run of the season.
Travis Honeyman stayed hot for the Birds, going 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to six games. Kevin Sim also had a pair of hits, one of which was a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Mariners 3, Gatemen 0 (Game 1)
Liam Sullivan struck out 10 across five shutout innings as Harwich shut down Wareham at Spillane Field.
Sullivan (2-0) surrendered just four hits and one walk to cruise to his second win of the season. The Mariners struck for three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Nick Goodwin had an RBI single, and Joe Vetrano and Ryan McCarty each had a sacrifice fly.
Gatemen starter Michael Sansone’s (0-2) struggles continued, as he gave up three runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk, but suffered his second loss. Wareham mustered just six hits, and Deric Fabian had two of them.
Whitecaps 3, Braves 1 (Game 2)
Alex Freeland hit a two-run home run to headline a three-run third as Brewster earned a two-game sweep of its doubleheader with Bourne.
Freeland leads the league with five homers and has went yard in three of his last six games. Davis Diaz followed Freeman’s blast with a solo shot, and that was all the Caps needed to get to .500 on the season. Grant Taylor (1-1) allowed just two hits through five innings. He gave up one run, walked one and struck out six.
Christopher Brito homered in the top of the first for Bravos, who have been held to just one run in each of their last three games.
Harbor Hawks 4, Anglers 4 (Game 2)
Mitchell Jebb, Nolan Schanuel and Rocco Peppi all had two hits as Hyannis tied with Chatham.
Johnny Castagnozzi homered for the A’s, and Marcus Brown and Jake DeLeo added one RBI apiece. Chatham trailed 4-3 heading into the seventh, but Castagnozzi’s blast tied things up to allow the Anglers to grab a point in the standings.
Chatham starter Ben Hampton went five innings, allowing six hits, two runs and no walks while striking out seven. Harbor Hawks starter Jonathan Fincher went just four innings and also allowed two runs. He surrendered five hits, one walk and fanned six.
Kettleers 0, Firebirds 0 (Game 2)
Neither team tallied more than three hits as Cotuit and Orleans finished in a scoreless tie in the second game of a doubleheader.
Tyler Johnson, Carter Trice and Cameron Collier had the Ketts’ three hits, while Luke Keaschall and Nate Furman had the Birds’ two. All five hits in the game were singles.
Starters Ty Johnson (COT) and Donye Evans (ORL) both went four innings. Johnson allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out four, and Evans gave up two hits, two walks and fanned three.
