Cape League roundup: June 25
Pickler makes history, Mooney flirts with cycle and Chatham snaps losing streak
Red Sox 5, Kettleers 3
Scott Pickler picked up his 540th win, making him the winningest field manager in Cape Cod League history, as Y-D handed Cotuit its second straight loss.
Starter Bryce Robison allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits through five innings while walking one and striking out three. Bayden Root pitched a scoreless sixth, and Luke Jewett (1-0) allowed one run over the final three innings to pick up the win.
A three-run eighth that was headlined by RBI singles from William Hamiter and Caden Connor allowed the Red Sox to break a 2-2 tie. Brooks Baldwin had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame to trim the deficit, but the bats then when silent in the ninth.
Tyler Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for Cotuit, and Baldwin had two RBIs.
Commodores 6, Gatemen 4
Alex Mooney was a double short of the cycle and Falmouth put together a late-game rally to edge Wareham.
The ‘Dores struck for four runs in the seventh behind a two-run homer from Mooney and Jacob Walsh’s two-RBI single. Mooney then tripled home a run in the eighth and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Duke product went 3-for-5 and had three RBIs and two runs.
Ty Evans had three hits and three runs for the Gatemen, who fall to 4-7-1 on the season. Hogan Windish and Alan Roden each had two hits, and Bobby Alcock (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Firebirds 4, Mariners 1
Isaac Humphrey and Bennett Lee each drove in two runs as Orleans topped Harwich at Whitehouse Field.
Humphrey had three hits and Lee had two, while Travis Honeyman added a pair of hits as well. The Birds once again used a coalition of arms to get the job done, with Tommy Hopfe (1-0) picking up the win after 3 2/3 innings of work and Chris Clark tallying his third save of the season.
Nick Goodwin had an RBI single in the sixth, plating the Mariners’ only run. He was one of six Harwich players to record a hit, all of which were singles.
Anglers 7, Whitecaps 2
Chatham used a five-run second inning to cruise past Brewster, snapping a four-game losing streak.
Hayden Travinski had an RBI double and Guy Garibay Jr. and Caden Grice each had two-RBI singles during the offensive outburst. All three players finished with a pair of RBIs on the evening to give starter Cy Nielson (2-0) his second win of the season. The left-hander went five innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit. He walked one and struck out seven.
Jackson Nezuh (0-1) allowed all six runs to take the loss. Michael Sirota doubled and David Mendham singled to account for the Caps’ only two hits.
Braves 1, Harbor Hawks 1
Matt Shaw had his third multi-hit game of the season in what was a pitcher’s duel for the better part of the night as Bourne tied with Hyannis.
Shaw went 3-for-4 with the Braves’ only RBI and is now hitting .450 through his first five games with the team. Dominic Pitelli drove in the Hawks’ lone run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Hyannis starter Ty Good was stellar, tossing five scoreless frames. He allowed three hits, one walk and struck out five. Reliever Nelson Berkwich was just as good for Bourne, providing three-no hit innings. He also walked one and struck out five.
