Cape League roundup: June 21
Chenault saves the day, Y-D offense explodes and Tatrow doubles home a pair to end it
Kettleers 5, Gatemen 3
Ethan Chenault struck out four across 3 2/3 innings of no-hit relief as Cotuit edged Wareham to extend its win streak to eight games.
Chenault (1-0) has now allowed just two hits through 7 2/3 innings of work on the season and has yet to surrender a run. The right-hander took over for Daniel Brooks, who lasted just 2 1/3 innings after allowing three runs on two hits and three walks.
The Ketts got to Gatemen starter Matt Jachec (0-2) early, striking for four runs in the third inning. After Zachary Cole’s RBI single, Victor Scott II doubled to bring home a pair. Scott later came around to score when Justin Miknis was caught trying to steal second.
Wareham responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Max Anderson walked with the bases loaded, Ryan Campos scored on a fielder’s choice and Hogan Windish came home on a wild pitch. That would be all the Gatemen would get, and Ryan Ritter gave Cotuit some insurance with a solo homer in the ninth.
Red Sox 8, Braves 4
Homer Bush Jr. had three hits and Michael Boeve and Pascanel Ferreras each tallied two RBIs as Y-D cruised past Bourne in a game that was called after eight innings due to darkness.
The Yarmouth-Dennis offense was potent, rallying for 12 hits to improve to 2-0-1 against the Bravos on the season. Starter Garrett Gainous was tagged for four runs, but Shaun Gamelin (1-0) gave up just one hit over the final three innings to pick up the win.
Jack Duffy and Wyatt Henseler had two hits apiece for Bourne, and Matt Shaw added a two-run homer. However, the Braves’ defense struggled, committing three errors.
Whitecaps 5, Harbor Hawks 4
Grayson Tatrow hit a walk-off two-RBI double as Brewster crept past Hyannis at Stony Brook Field.
It was Tatrow’s second double of the night, and Alex Freeland went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs. Ryan Lobus (1-0) earned the win, and started Brian Fitzpatrick gave up just two hits while striking out four in five innings on the bump.
The Hawks used six different arms, five of which lasted no more than two innings. Cole McConnell went 2-for-4 and Tito Flores blasted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to extend his hit streak to seven games.
Firebirds 6, Mariners 3
Travis Honeyman hit his league-leading third home run of the season as Orleans defeated Harwich to win its third consecutive game.
Honeyman is tied with Brewster’s Alex Freeland as the top power threat in the league. Bennett Lee also homered as the Birds put a run on the board in five of their eight trips to the plate. Field manager Kelly Nicholson used five pitchers to get the job done, with Cam Jones (1-0) recording the win and Chris Clark notching his second save of the season.
Tommy Seidl and Kenny Levari combined for four of the Mariners’ six hits. Ryan McCarty had a two-run home run in the fifth, but the first three hitters in Harwich’s lineup (Nick Goodwin, Tatem Levins, Brock Wilken) combined to go 0-for-12.
Commodores 4, Anglers 1
A three-run fourth inning lifted Falmouth over Chatham to snap a two-game losing skid.
Jacob Walsh’s solo blast and Drew Brutcher’s two-run shot accounted for all the runs in the frame. The early rally helped Josh Hartle (1-0) pick up the win, and it was well deserved, as the southpaw went five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Jake DeLeo had two hits for the A’s, and Chatham scored its only run in the eighth inning when Nelson Rivera crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
