Cape League roundup: June 20
Goodwin walks off, Boeve leads the way at the dish and DeLeo clears bases with go-ahead grand slam
Mariners 3, Harbor Hawks 1 (Game 1)
Nick Goodwin hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh as Harwich topped Hyannis in the first game of the teams’ doubleheader.
The Mariners went into the inning down 1-0, but Cole Harting tied things up with an RBI single before Goodwin had the game-winning blast. Jay Driver (1-1) suffered the loss after going 1 2/3 innings.
Gage Ziehl (1-0) was credited with the win. He relieved Jonathan Santucci, who allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four through five innings.
Tito Flores drove in the Harbor Hawks’ only run, leading off the game with a solo homer.
Red Sox 4, Braves 2 (Game 1)
Michael Boeve went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, two runs and a walk to lead Y-D past Bourne.
Boeve accounted for half of his team’s hits, and the Red Sox got four scoreless innings out of starter Brian Edgington (1-0). Y-D got to each of the Braves’ pitchers, tagging Hunter Loyd (0-1) for two runs, and Sam Bello and Bennett Flynn for one.
Bourne scored both of its runs in the sixth inning. Evan Sleight and Ryan Proto both drove in a run thanks to two Red Sox errors in the frame.
Anglers 5, Gatemen 3 (Game 1)
Jake DeLeo hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning to help Chatham sneak by Wareham.
Starter Carson Whisenhunt (1-1) gave the A’s four innings before Magnus Ellerts gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out seven to earn a nine-out save. Michael Sansone (0-1) gave up all five runs in 3 2/3 innings for the Gatemen.
Torin Montgomery went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Wareham, and Blake Wright added a two-run home run in the third.
Harbor Hawks 4, Mariners 3 (Game 2)
Cole McConnell had three hits and the bullpen provided 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief as Hyannis bested Harwich to cap off the twinbill.
After Jacob Campbell’s RBI double in the top of the fourth gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead, Brock Wilken hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame to trim the deficit. Harwich tacked on another run in the fifth when Kyle Teel plated Jake Gelof on a fielder’s choice, but relievers Brandon Neeck and Ty Langenberg silenced the comeback.
Tito Flores and Nolan Schanuel had two hits apiece as part of Hyannis’ 10-hit showing. German Fajardo (0-2) took the loss and was released by the team Tuesday morning. The Mariners were held to just one hit.
Anglers 2, Gatemen 0 (Game 2)
Caden Grice’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning would be all Chatham needed to sweep its doubleheader against Wareham at Veterans field.
Matthew Hogan added a pair of hits and Cooper Ingle had a double, while reliever Cy Nielson (1-0) surrendered one hit, one walk and struck out three in 2 2/3 innings. Brian Holiday retired the Gatemen in order in the seventh to pick up the save, his first of the season.
Hogan Windish doubled and Max Anderson singled as Wareham only mustered two hits. The Gatemen have now lost three in a row.
Red Sox 2, Braves 2 (Game 2)
Ryan Fischer tossed a no-hitter through five innings as Bourne tied Y-D in what was both teams’ second draw of the season.
The right-hander walked two and struck out five before Tyler Vogel gave up a run in the sixth and Seth Keener gave up an unearned run in the seventh. The Bravos had a chance to walk off with two outs and runners on first and third in the home half of the seventh, but John Peck struck out to end the game.
Elijah Nunez and Bryce Eblin each had an RBI for Bourne, and Caden Connor tallied Y-D’s only hit, a single in the sixth.
