Cape League roundup: June 18
Milone comes through in the clutch, two massive innings carry Falmouth and Y-D makes Cape Cod League history
Whitecaps 2, Anglers 1
Brennan Milone had a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and drove in both of his team’s runs as Brewster snuck by Chatham.
Ryan Lasko led off the home half of the eighth with a base hit, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third before Milone’s one-out knock brought him home for what would be the game-winning run.
Paul Gervase (1-0) then worked around a walk in the ninth to pick up the win. Starter Joseph Mancini was also terrific, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out seven through five shutout innings.
Jake DeLeo went 2-for-3 in his Chatham debut, and Dominic Tamez drove in the Anglers’ only run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Commodores 12, Gatemen 9
Anthony Mackenzie hit a three-run homer and Brayden Taylor added a solo shot to power Falmouth over Wareham at Spillane Field.
After trailing 4-1 heading into the sixth, the ‘Dores erupted for six runs in the inning behind Mackenzie’s blast and an RBI single from Coby Halter. Falmouth tacked on five more insurance runs in the eighth when six straight batters reached base to lead off the frame. Wareham’s pitching staff had a lot of issues finding the zone, walking 10 Commodores.
The Gatemen nearly came all the way back in the bottom of the ninth, scoring five runs of their own. Blake Wright, Hogan Windish and Jack Housinger all had three hits for Wareham, and Cole Elvish and Windish had two RBIs apiece.
Red Sox 11, Mariners 0
Jared Lyons allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out six through six innings of work as Y-D blanked Harwich in seven innings.
While the Red Sox did have nine hits, they did take advantage of seven hit batsmen reaching base, which was a Cape Cod League record. Seven different players drove in a run, with Jonathon Long and Gunnar Gouldsmith each tallying two RBIs.
Harwich finished with just four hits, two of which came from Brock Wilken. Nick Goodwin was held hitless, ending his hit streak at five games.
Kettleers 8, Harbor Hawks 2
Ryan Ritter went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs as Cotuit cruised past Hyannis to win their fifth consecutive game to open the season.
The Kentucky infielder had a three-run homer in the sixth and an RBI single in the eighth to help Cotuit remain undefeated. Brooks Baldwin and Kyle Karros each added two hits, and started Kade Morris (1-0) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out two.
Dominic Pitelli homered for the Hawks, and Cole McConnell went 2-for-4. Thomas Balboni (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs, four of which were earned, in just one inning.
Braves 8, Firebirds 2
Wyatt Henseler went 3-for-5 and Chris Brito and Brendan Cumming each blasted a two-run home run as Bourne defeated Orleans.
Brimfield, Massachusetts, native Matt Shaw also had a big night at the plate in his debut, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double, two runs and a walk while stealing a pair of bases. Nigel Belgrave (1-0) earned the win, striking out four in two perfect innings of relief.
Travis Honeyman had three hits for the Birds. He homered to lead off the home half of the first and also doubled in the third. Wyatt Loncar (0-1) and Josh Allen gave up all eight runs, but Cooper McKeehan provided two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
