Cape League roundup: June 17
Boeve walks off, wild pitch scores McConnell in the ninth and eighth-inning rally propels Gatemen
Red Sox 5, Firebirds 4
Michael Boeve hit a walk-off RBI single over the head of Travis Honeyman in center field as Y-D defeated Orleans in celebratory fashion.
The Birds went into the ninth trailing 4-1, but Honeyman hit a two-run homer and Luke Keaschall walked with the bases loaded to even things heading into the bottom half of the inning. Luke Shliger singled with one out, advanced to second on a balk and then came around to score on Boeve’s two-out base hit to give the Sox their first win of 2022.
Cole Carrigg and Luke Franzoni each had three hits for Y-D. Jonathon Long added a solo home run to lead off the fourth, his first blast of the season.
Bryce Robison made his first start of the season for the Red Sox, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits, one walk and striking out five. Owen Hackman (1-0) picked up the win despite pitching just 1/3 of an inning.
Harbor Hawks 4, Commodores 3
Cole McConnell scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to push Hyannis over Falmouth.
After the ‘Dores tallied two runs in the fourth against starter Austin Strickland, relievers Brandon Llewellyn, Ethan Hammerberg and Jay Driver combined to allow just one run over five innings.
Tito Flores went 2-for-4 for the Harbor Hawks, while Colby Halter and Brayden Taylor each hit solo home runs for Falmouth.
Gatemen 4, Whitecaps 1
Torin Montgomery, Jack Housinger and Hogan Windish had RBI singles in the eighth inning as Wareham defeated Brewster at Stony Brook Field.
The late rally broke a 1-1 tie that stemmed from strong performances from both starting pitchers. Jason Woodward (WAR) walked two and struck out three across four no-hit innings, and Jackson Nezuh (BRE) also went four innings, surrendering one hit and two walks while striking out six.
Montgomery had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs. Ryan Campos added a pair of hits for the Gatemen, who have now won back-to-back games.
Braves 4, Mariners 1
John Peck slashed three hits and the bullpen allowed zero hits in five innings of work as Bourne bested Harwich to get back in the win column.
Kade Grundy (1-0) walked two and struck out three to pick up the win, and Ty Cummings walked one and struck out a pair to earn his second nine-out save of the season.
Chris Brito and Jack Duffy drove in all of the Braves’ runs. Former Bourne infielder Nick Goodwin had one of the Mariners’ three hits, extending his hit streak to five games.
