Cape League roundup: July 9
Bourne offense puts up video game numbers, Ingle's walk-off single leads Chatham past Orleans and Harwich bats prove to be too much for Cotuit
Braves 18, Harbor Hawks 10
John Peck finished with six RBIs and Bourne erupted for a whopping 11 runs in the ninth to cruise past Hyannis on Saturday night.
The Bravos found themselves trailing 7-1 before a five-run fifth brought them within one. Wyatt Henseler, Brennan Milone and Peck each had an RBI single during that rally, but it was nothing compared to what was about to come four innings later.
Justin Janas had an RBI single and Mitch Jebb scored on Nolan Schnanuel’s fielder’s choice in the sixth to give the Hawks some insurance, but Bourne stayed close with a run in the seventh before its offensive onslaught.
Peck had two doubles and five RBIs in the ninth inning alone, and Carson Jones blasted a two-run homer to headline the frame. Although the Braves’ offense stole the show, Rocco Peppi tripled and had three RBIs for Hyannis, and Janas went 3-for-5 with a double.
Anglers 3, Firebirds 2
Cooper Ingle had a walk-off RBI single and starter Ben Hampton allowed just one run through 6 1/3 innings as Chatham edged Orleans.
Guy Garibay Jr. was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Marcus Brown’s base hit. Ingle then delivered the game-winning hit to give the A’s their first win since July 4.
Hampton surrendered five hits, walked one and struck out seven before turning things over to Tommy Molsky (1-0), who earned the win. Firebirds starter Donye Evans did not allow a hit through four innings of work, but did walk four while striking out six. Travis Honeyman went 2-for-4 for the Birds with a home run, one RBI and two runs.
Mariners 11, Kettleers 6
Nick Goodwin and Joe Vetrano both had three hits as Harwich defeated Cotuit in what end up being a seven-inning game due to darkness.
Goodwin homered, doubled and scored twice, while Vetrano had three singles, one RBI and two runs.
Cotuit’s Tyler Johnson blasted his sixth home run of the season as part of a 2-for-4 day. The three-run blast halved Harwich’s lead in third, but the Mariners quickly answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth, as Hunter Stokely was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Bryan Arendt had a two-run single.
Commodores 7, Whitecaps 3
Anthony Mackenzie had a two-RBI double as part of four-run first inning, which would be all Falmouth needed to best Brewster at Stony Brook Field.
Andrew Pinckney and Jackson Nicklaus each added an RBI single during the early surge to help the ‘Dores pick up their fifth win over their past seven games. Pinckney also had an RBI triple as part of a three-run fifth.
Josh Stewart (1-0) was credited with the win after two innings of no-hit relief. He walked one and fanned four. The Caps scored two of their three runs in the home half of the fifth thanks to Alex Freeland’s RBI single and Cameron Fisher’s RBI fielder’s choice.
Red Sox 4, Gatemen 2
Jared Lyons scattered five hits across six innings and Conner Thurman picked up a nine-out save as Y-D topped Wareham.
Lyons (3-1) allowed just two runs (one earned) and walked three while striking out two. Thurman held the Gatemen to just one hit and fanned three.
Caden Connor’s RBI groundout in the seventh gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead, and Y-D added one more run just an inning later on Jordan Thompson’s run-scoring single. Max Anderson drove in both of Wareham’s runs with his single in the first.
