Cape League roundup: July 8
Brand pitches Wareham to victory, Sim climbs home run leaderboard and Brewster bats heat up late
Gatemen 7, Kettleers 2
Jonathan Brand scattered just three hits across five shutout innings and Chase Davis had four hits as Wareham cruised past Cotuit on Friday night.
Brand (1-1) did not surrender a walk and struck out seven to pick up his first win of the season. Davis had an RBI, doubled and scored three times to pace the Gatemen’s offense, while Max Anderson, Owen Diodati and Kellum Clark each added two hits.
The Ketts did not score until the sixth, as CJ Kayfus brought home Brooks Baldwin with a sacrifice fly. Harrison Cohen (2-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts.
All seven of Cotuit’s hits were singles, and Tyler Johnson was the only Kettleer to have a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Mariners 6, Red Sox 6
Chris Newell, Brock Wilken and Joe Vetrano all went deep as Harwich tied Y-D at Red Wilson Field.
Newell and Wilken went back-to-back in the fifth, while Vetrano hit a two-run shot to open scoring in the top of the first. Vetrano also doubled and Graham Pauley added a pair of hits for the Mariners, who extended their unbeaten streak to four games.
The Red Sox did a good portion of their damage in the bottom of the fifth, striking for three runs. Chase Meidroth walked with the bases loaded, and Jonathon Long and Cole Carrigg both grounded into a fielder’s choice that resulted in a run. Carrigg finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a run.
Whitecaps 4, Anglers 4
A late rally erased a four-run deficit as Brewster came back to tie with Chatham in a game that was shortened due to darkness.
The Caps trailed 4-0, but Chase Adkison and Parks Harber each had an RBI single to pull within two in the bottom of the sixth before David Mendham and Kurtis Byrne scored on a couple of wild pitches in the seventh to pull even.
Caden Grice and Noah Ledford each hit two-run homers for the A’s. Roman Kimball was also solid out of the bullpen, providing three innings of one-hit relief. He walked one and fanned six.
Harbor Hawks 5, Commodores 4
Magdiel Cotto struck out seven across 5 1/3 innings and a three-run seventh inning propelled Hyannis over Falmouth.
Cotto (1-0) allowed three hits, one run and walked one to pick up the win. The seventh-inning rally reinforced the Hawks’ 2-1 lead, as Dominic Pitelli had an RBI single, Mitch Jebb scored on Cole McConnell’s groundout and Justin Janas scored on an error.
Drew Brutcher had a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth for the ‘Dores, but they were unable to push across another run to at least secure a point in the standings.
Firebirds 6, Braves 4
Kevin Sim blasted his fifth home run of the season as Orleans edged Bourne.
Sim now has the most homers on the Cape along with Brewster’s Alex Freeland and Cotuit’s Tyler Johnson. His solo shot came as part of a three-run first inning in which Issac Humphrey also left the yard and Luke Keaschall had a sacrifice fly.
The Bravos showed life in the home half of the ninth, scoring a pair of runs on Christopher Brito’s two-RBI double.
