Cape League roundup: July 7
Shaw continues offensive dominance, Reyzelman fans 10 and Diodati makes noise in second game back in action-packed night on Cape
Braves 12, Kettleers 7
Matt Shaw had a night to remember at the plate, going 4-for-5 with six RBIs, as Bourne’s offense exploded to cruise past Cotuit on Thursday night.
The Maryland product had two home runs to go along with a pair of doubles and scored four times to lead the Bravos to their first win since July 1. Josh Moylan added a three-run homer, and Evan Sleight doubled and singled to extend his hitting streak to six games.
Bourne jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but the Ketts tied things up in the fifth thanks to a two-run home run from Tommy Troy and an RBI single from Tyler Johnson. The Braves then went on to score seven unanswered runs before Cotuit scored twice in the bottom of the ninth.
Like Shaw, Troy also went deep twice and had six RBIs. He is now batting .407 through his first seven games on the season.
Gatemen 12, Harbor Hawks 10
Owen Diodati had three hits and drove in three in his second game back on the Cape as Wareham edged Hyannis in what was a high-scoring affair.
Diodati played for the Gatemen last season, blasting seven home runs in 2021, and put his first one of this summer over the fence just four batters into the game. Wareham rode the offensive momentum, going on to score at least twice in each of the first three innings.
The top of the lineup carried for the Hawks, as the Nos. 1-3 hitters (Mitch Jebb, Justin Janas, Nolan Schanuel) combined to go 7-for-13 with six RBIs. Max Anderson also had three hits for the Gatemen.
Whitecaps 9, Anglers 6
Kurtis Byrne and Logan Bravo each had an RBI double in the eighth to give Brewster the insurance it needed to top Chatham.
The Caps jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the A’s got within two in the sixth after Nelson Rivera homered and Mitchell Daly slashed a two-run single. Brewster later responded with three runs of its own in the eighth, thanks in large part to Byrne and Bravo, before tacking on another run in the ninth to secure the win.
Whitecaps starter Brian Fitzpatrick (2-0) continued his dominance on the Cape, scattering just three hits across five innings. He did not walk anybody and struck out six. Jake DeLeo went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run for Chatham, and Daly finished with two hits.
Mariners 5, Red Sox 3
Starter Eric Reyzelman struck out 10 in six innings of work and Nick Goodwin hit a two-run homer as Harwich bested Y-D.
Reyzelman (1-1) allowed just one run on one hit and walked two to pick up his first win of the season. After relief appearances by Teddy Sharkey and Danny Wilkinson, Drew Conover went 1 1/3 innings to notch the save.
Tommy Seidl had an RBI triple for the Mariners, while Jordan Thompson went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Sox.
Commodores 6, Firebirds 2
Philip Abner threw four innings of no-hit relief and Alex Mooney and Colby Halter each had three hits to lift Falmouth over Orleans.
Halter finished with a home run, two RBIs and a run, and Mooney doubled and scored twice. Andrew Pinckney also went deep for the fourth time this season, and Abner (2-0) walked two and fanned one.
The Birds were held scoreless for eight innings, but finally broke through in the ninth. Jack Bulger scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a base hit to lead off the inning, and Nate Furman scored on Jacob Stinson’s groundout. Travis Honeyman, Orleans’ leadoff hitter, went 0-for-5.
