Cape League roundup: July 6
Campos comes through late, three pitchers combine to throw one-hitter for Cotuit and Harwich rallies to salvage a point in the standings
Gatemen 1, Firebirds 0
Ryan Campos plated the only run of the game in the eighth inning and the pitching staff combined to throw a four-hitter as Wareham edged Orleans on Wednesday night.
After Blake Wright singled to lead off the frame and Deric Fabian had a base hit of his own with one out, Campos’ single that drove in Wright proved to be the difference maker that extended the Gatemen’s unbeaten streak to four games.
Wareham starter Jacob Cravey allowed just two hits and a walk in five innings while striking out four. Grayson Moore worked 2 1/3 innings, and Nikolas Mazza (1-1) struck out the only two batters he faced to pick up the win before Cameron Weston hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to notch the save.
Isaac Humphrey had two hits for the Birds, one of which was a double, to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Luke Keaschall and Kevin Sim each added a single.
Mariners 4, Anglers 4
A ninth-inning surge allowed Harwich to steal a point in the standings, as it rallied late to tie with Chatham.
Down to their final two outs, the Mariners saw Tatem Levins and Pres Cavenaugh score on a pair of wild pitches to pull within one run. Chris Newell then singled to bring home Nick Goodwin before reliever Blake Purnell worked around a single in the ninth to retain the draw.
Brock Wilken got Harwich on the board with a solo home run in the fourth, while Guy Garibay Jr. went deep as part of a four-run first inning for the A’s.
Red Sox 3, Commodores 2
Eric Yost surrendered just one unearned run to break into the win column as Y-D bested Falmouth at Guv Fuller Field.
Yost (1-3) went 6 2/3 innings, scattering just four hits, walking two and fanning two. ‘Dores starter Joshua Roberge (0-1) was also impressive, giving up just one run through four innings. He allowed just two hits, one walk and struck out seven, but still took the loss.
Jonathon Long and Cole Carrigg both had an RBI single in the sixth to extend Y-D’s lead to 3-0. Falmouth scored one run in the seventh and one in the eighth, but could not complete the comeback.
Braves 1, Harbor Hawks 1
Starters Jackson Baumeister and Adam Tulloch each worked five strong innings as Bourne and Hyannis tied.
Baumeister allowed one run on four hits, did not surrender a walk and struck out seven. Tulloch also allowed four hits, an unearned run, walked four and fanned five. Nelson Berkwich then provided four innings of one-hit relief for the Bravos, striking out three.
John Peck grounded into a double play in the second, but Christopher Brito came home for Bourne’s only run of the game. The Hawks responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Christian Moore’s fielder’s choice drove in Nolan Schanuel to cap the scoring.
Kettleers 1, Whitecaps 1
Three pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter and Brooks Baldwin doubled and tripled as Cotuit tied Brewster in a low-scoring affair.
Ketts starter Dalton Rogers struck out seven across four innings, walking two and allowing one run. Ben Johnson came out of the bullpen and went three innings, and Joseph Gieg gave up the Caps’ only hit in his two innings of work.
Davis Diza singled for Brewster, while five other players had hits for Cotuit to piggyback off Baldwin’s 2-for-4 day.
