Cape League roundup: July 4
Jachec has strong outing vs. former team, Pinckney drives in five and late rally allows Hyannis to go home with tie
Braves 2, Gatemen 2
Carson Roccaforte hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to allow Bourne to salvage a meeting with Wareham on Monday night as the teams tied for the third time this season.
The Gatemen were in a position to take home a win after Alan Roden drove in Max Anderson on a groundout in the top of the ninth, but Roccaforte was able to even the score by the final pitch to prevent the loss.
Hogan Windish got Wareham on the board in the first inning with a solo home run, and the Gatemen carried that 1-0 lead all the way to the seventh, where Even Sleight hit an RBI double to plate the Bravos’ first run.
For the second straight night, a former Bourne pitcher got the nod for the Gatemen, and this time it was Matt Jachec. The right-hander was stellar, pitching six scoreless innings. He gave up just three hits and struck out five.
Commodores 10, Kettleers 7
Andrew Pinckney homered twice and drove in five RBIs as Falmouth handed Cotuit back-to-back losses for just the second time this season.
The ‘Dores got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings. They led for the entirety of the game, but the Ketts showed some life in the bottom of the ninth when Tyler Johnson blasted a two-run home run. They were unable to mount a comeback, but Johnson finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 with the home run, three RBIs, two runs and a double. Justin Miknis also homered for Cotuit.
Garrett Coe (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after two innings of relief, and despite giving up a couple runs, Joey Ryan still managed to record his second save.
Harbor Hawks 5, Red Sox 5
A ninth-inning rally erased a two-run deficit as Hyannis tied with Y-D at Red Wilson Field.
Nolan Schanuel and Mitch Jebb each had RBI singles during the late push, and Jay Driver struck out two in the bottom half of the inning to secure the tie. Clinton, Massachusetts, native Jackson Emus was also impressive out of the bullpen, walking one and fanning three in 2 1/3 innings.
The Red Sox took their only lead of the game in the fifth, as Chase Meidroth hit an RBI double and Cole Carrigg had a double of his own to bring home a pair after Michael Boeve walked.
Mariners 1, Whitecaps 1
Billy Seidl gave up just one unearned run across five innings as Harwich tied with Brewster in a low-scoring affair.
Seidl didn’t allow a hit but walked four while retiring six by way of the strikeout. For the Caps, starter Henry Leake lasted just 3 1/3 innings, giving up one run on five hits, walking three and striking out three.
Brewster scored its only run in the top of the first when Michael Sirota grounded into a fielder’s choice and Alex Freeland came around to score on an error. The Mariners responded in the third, as Chris Newell tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Kenny Levari’s sacrifice fly.
Anglers 7, Firebirds 1
The bullpen allowed just two hits over the final four innings as Chatham cruised past Orleans at Veterans Field.
Trevor Martin allowed the two hits and a walk while striking out five in three innings before Connor Bovair worked around a walk in the ninth to prevent the Birds from earning back-to-back wins. Starter Joe Miller (1-2) took the win, though, giving up one run on six hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out four.
Noah Ledford and Marcus Brown each had two RBIs for the A’s, while Orleans scored its only run in the first on Kevin Sim’s RBI double.
