Cape League roundup: July 3
Brewster offense erupts, eighth-inning rally powers Hyannis and Chatham continues to scuffle away from home
Whitecaps 16, Mariners 5
Carson Demartini had four RBIs and Logan Bravo, Javier Vaz and Grayson Tatrow each added three as Brewster dominated Harwich on Sunday night in what ended up being an eight-inning game.
Bravo and Tatrow led the Caps with three hits apiece as part of Brewster’s 16-hit showing. The Whitecaps did a good portion of their damage in the seventh, scoring seven runs. Bravo and Vaz had two-run singles and Demartini had an RBI base hit in the frame to headline the offensive explosion.
After falling into an early 6-2 deficit, the Mariners struck for three runs in the fourth to pull within one. Hunter Stokely grounded into a fielder’s choice and brought home Joe Vetrano, and Tatem Levins followed with a two-RBI double.
Starter Joseph Mancini gave up all five runs before Jackson Nezuh (1-1) took over and worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed just one hit, two walks and struck out one.
Harbor Hawks 5, Red Sox 2
Cole McConnell drove in two runs in the eighth inning as Hyannis rallied late to beat Y-D.
After Jacob Campbell singled, Luke Shliger made an error on the play and Justin Janas scored as a result to give the Harbor Hawks a 3-2 lead. McConnell then came up with runners on second and third and drove them both home with the help of an error by center fielder Cole Carrigg.
The late-game madness took some attention off Brody McCullough, who had a great start. The right-hander gave the Hawks five one-hit innings in which he walked one and fanned nine.
Braves 2, Gatemen 2
Evan Sleight homered for the second straight game and the bullpen provided 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief as Bourne tied with Wareham.
Sleight’s two-run blast evened the score in the second inning after Hogan Windish had an RBI double and Ryan Campos singled him home in the first. After Braves starter Cade Boxrucker exited, Ryan Fischer allowed three hits, one walk and struck out two in 2 2/3 innings, and Ty Cummings scattered four hits through the final three innings while striking out a pair of Gatemen.
Wareham starter Michael Sansone took a no-decision against his former team. The southpaw went five innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven.
Commodores 5, Kettleers 0
Colby Halter and Jacob Walsh hit home runs and four pitchers combined to toss a shutout as Falmouth blanked Cotuit.
Halter homered in the third, and Walsh had a solo shot to lead off what ended up being a three-run sixth. Philip Abner (1-0) earned the win after hurling two innings. He surrendered one hit, one walk and struck out two.
The Ketts had their best chance to score in the fourth. Tyler Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Brooks Baldwin followed with a single, but Johnson was caught stealing and Zachary Cole then grounded into a fielder’s choice to kill all momentum.
Firebirds 1, Anglers 0
Donye Evans dazzled on the mound to lead Orleans to a narrow victory over Chatham at Eldredge Park.
Evans (1-0) gave up two hits and walked two in five innings while striking out four. The Birds scored the lone run of the game in the second when Cam Jones singled to bring home Logan Beard.
The A’s are now winless over their last eight games, going 0-6-2 during that span. They have yet to win on the road this season.
