Cape League roundup: July 2
Hampton, Wilkinson engage in pitcher's duel, Falmouth holds off Bourne and Cotuit cools down Hyannis
Anglers 1, Mariners 1
Ben Hampton provided 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief as Chatham tied with Harwich on Saturday night to snap a four-game losing streak.
The southpaw didn’t walk anybody while striking out eight. Danny Wilkinson was just as impressive for the Mariners, working three innings in which he recorded eight of his nine outs by way of the strikeout. He did not allow a hit and walked just one.
Harwich opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third. Chris Newell walked to lead off the inning and Joe Vetrano singled to bring him home after Nick Goodwin grounded out.
Jake DeLeo evened the score just a half inning later, blasting his third home run of the season. The Georgia Tech product has homered in back-to-back games and is one of nine players on the Cape to have three or more home runs on the season.
Commodores 6, Braves 4
Jacob Walsh and Peyton Stovall each went deep and three relievers combined to allow just one hit over four innings as Falmouth bested Bourne.
Walsh finished the night 3-for-5 with the home run, two RBIs and a run. Josh Stewart and Kaleb Corbett held the Bravos scoreless through 2 1/3 innings before Levi Wells came in and got Bourne to ground into a pair of double plays, helping him pick up his first save of the season.
The Braves tallied just two hits through the first five innings and were no-hit through three before erupting for four runs in the sixth. Jack Duffy and Brennan Milone each had an RBI single, Christopher Brito doubled home Duffy and Wyatt Henseler scored Milone on an RBI groundout.
Kettleers 3, Harbor Hawks 1
Harrison Cohen went five scoreless innings and Victor Scott II went a perfect 3-for-3 as Cotuit edged Hyannis to snap its four-game win streak.
Cohen (2-0) scattered five hits, walked one and struck out three. Scott tripled and scored once, and Brooks Baldwin added two hits. Justin Janas, Cole McConnell and Dominic Pitelli each had two hits for the Hawks, and Tito Flores and Nolan Schanuel doubled.
The Ketts could have taken the victory thanks to their fourth inning alone, as Tyler Johnson hit a solo homer to lead off the frame and Ryan Ritter later singled to drive in Brooks Baldwin.
Gatemen 11, Red Sox 3
Hogan Windish extended his hit streak to four games and Cameron Weston threw four innings of scoreless relief as Wareham trounced Y-D.
Windish went 3-for-6 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs, and Blake Wright added two hits as part of the Gatemen’s 11-hit showing. Weston (3-0) allowed five hits, walked two and struck out five to pick up his league-leading third win.
The Red Sox scored all three of their runs in the fourth when Caden Connor doubled home Michael Boeve and Jonathon Long followed with a two-run homer.
