Cape League roundup: July 16
McFarlane quiets Y-D, Jacobsen proves to be unhittable in relief and Diodati's two-run homer gives Wareham a point in the standings
Anglers 6, Red Sox 2
Alex McFarlane provided four innings of scoreless, one-hit relief as Chatham cruised past Y-D on Saturday night to snap a five-game winless streak.
McFarlane (1-0) walked two and struck out five to pick up his first win of the season. He took over for starter Cam Brown, who allowed two runs across three innings. The Red Sox got their only runs of the seven-inning game in the second on Luke Shliger’s RBI single and Caden Connor’s RBI double.
Guy Garibay Jr. broke the game open in the sixth, ripping a three-RBI double to give the the A’s a 4-2 lead. Chatham then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Y-D starter Jared Lyons took a no-decision, but still managed to post a strong outing. He allowed just one run on three hits while walking two and fanning six in five innings.
Kettleers 2, Mariners 1
Four pitchers combined to throw a two-hitter as Cotuit edged Harwich at Whitehouse Field.
Starter Daniel Brooks went three innings before handing things over to Will Jacobsen (1-0), who retired all nine batters he faced in order to earn the win. Cameron Wagoner then worked 1 2/3 innings before Cam Schuelke notched a four-out save.
CJ Kayfus’ RBI base hit in the first opened the scoring, and the Ketts scored again in the fourth when a passed ball brought home Trotter Harlan. The Mariners plated their lone run in the eighth when Joe Vetrano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Gatemen 4, Commodores 4
Owen Diodati blasted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to allow Wareham to salvage a tie with Falmouth.
Blake Wright singled to lead off the inning before Diodati pinch hit for Carter Graham and belted his second home run of the season. The ‘Dores tried to get things going in the bottom half of the frame with Peyton Stovall’s two-out single, but they could not mount a rally.
Stovall went 3-for-4 for Falmouth and was a triple shy of the cycle. Andrew Pinckney added a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Whitecaps 2, Braves 1
Zane Morehouse allowed just one hit in 5 2/3 innings of work as Brewster bested Bourne for the third time this season.
Morehouse (1-1) didn’t allow a run while walking four and striking out four. Ryan Chasse then fanned eight in 3 1/3 innings to tally his third save of the season.
Carson Demartini provided all of the Caps’ offense with his two-run double in the sixth. Christopher Brito singled home a run the following inning, but the Bravos could not bring anyone else home to tie things up.
Harbor Hawks 9, Firebirds 1
Cole McConnell smacked a two-run home run as part of a five-run fourth that helped Hyannis blow out Orleans at Eldredge park.
Rocco Peppi added a two-RBI single in the frame and Brendan Cumming scored on an error before the Hawks added four more runs an inning later. JD Urso’s RBI double in the bottom half of the fourth plated the Birds’ only run.
Austin Strickland (2-2) recorded the win thanks to two innings of shutout relief. He surrendered two hits, did not issue a walk and struck out two.
