Cape League roundup: July 12
Seidl's 3-run shot ends up being the difference-maker, Taylor fans 12 and Troy, McConnell go deep twice
Braves 4, Commodores 3
Alan Espinal homered and Nelson Berkwich surrendered just two runs over six innings of work to lead Bourne past Falmouth on Tuesday night to extend its win streak to three games.
Espinal also had an RBI single, while Bryce Eblin, Wyatt Henseler and Carson Jones each added two hits for the Bravos. Berkwich (1-0) scattered four hits, walked one and struck out three to pick up his first win of the season.
After striking for three runs off starter Grayson Hitt, the Braves struggled against reliever Philip Abner, who allowed one unearned run on four hits in five innings. He did not issue a walk and fanned six.
The ‘Dores pulled within one in the bottom of the ninth thanks to Anthony Mackenzie’s RBI single, but could not complete the comeback.
Mariners 7, Firebirds 5
Tommy Seidl’s three-run blast proved to be critical, as Harwich bested Orleans.
After Connor Burns hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to give the Birds a 4-0 lead, Seidl responded in the bottom of the frame with a homer of his own to get the Mariners on the board. Pres Cavenaugh and Joe Vetrano each had RBI singles as part of a three-run fifth, and Harwich tacked on one more run in the seventh to secure the win.
Nate Furman went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run for Orleans, while Isaac Humphrey singled, walked and scored twice. Hunter Hodges gave up just one hit and struck out four in two innings of relief to pick up the save.
Whitecaps 1, Red Sox 1
Grant Taylor picked up 12 strikeouts in six innings as Brewster and Y-D tied at Red Wilson Field.
Taylor allowed just one run on four hits and did not walk anyone. Paul Gervase was stellar out of the bullpen, fanning six across the final three innings while only allowing one hit. Yarmouth-Dennis starter Bryce Robison gave up one unearned run on five hits in five innings of work before Zach Veen and Luke Jewett combined for four innings of no-hit relief.
The Caps scored their lone run in the second on Kurtis Byrne’s RBI single. The Red Sox didn’t answer until the sixth with Luke Shliger’s RBI base hit.
Gatemen 5, Anglers 5
Wareham erased a four-run deficit and went on to tie with Chatham in a game that only lasted six innings after the lights went out at Spillane Field.
Jake DeLeo had an RBI single, Mitchell Daly had a sacrifice fly and Hayden Travinski went deep before Cooper Ingle’s sacrifice scored Marcus Brown in the third. But RBI singles from Peter Burns and Max Anderson and Hogan Windish’s run-scoring fielder’s choice brought the Gatemen within one in the home half of the third.
Daly had an RBI single in fourth to keep the A’s ahead, but Wareham scored once in the fourth and once in the fifth to even the score before the premature finish.
Kettleers 6, Harbor Hawks 6
Tommy Troy and Carter Trice hit back-to-back home runs in the third as Cotuit and Hyannis finished in a draw in a game that went eight innings due to darkness.
Eddie Park and Josh Pearson singled to lead off the inning before Troy cleared the bases with a three-run blast. Trice then followed with a solo shot to give the Ketts a 4-2 edge.
Cotuit extended its lead to 6-2 courtesy of Troy’s second home run of the day, but the Hawks scored four unanswered runs to close the game. Cole McConnell and Rocco Peppi each hit solo home runs in the sixth, and McConnell added another solo homer in the eighth.
