Cape League roundup: July 1
Sleight homers late to lift Bourne over Chatham, Robison dominates on the bump and Hyannis stays hot
Braves 3, Anglers 2
Evan Sleight hit a go-ahead solo home run and Matt Shaw added three hits to propel Bourne past Chatham on Friday night to extend its win streak to three games.
The Braves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the A’s struck for a pair of runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer from Jake DeLeo. Sleight then led off the seventh with what would be the game-winning blast.
Reliever Mason Pelio (1-0) held Chatham scoreless for three innings to pick up the win. He allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out four. Chatham loaded the bases in the ninth with one out, but Justin Willis buckled down and got the final two batters to fly out to earn the save.
DeLeo finished with two hits for the Anglers, and Caden Grice also had a pair. With Shaw’s three-hit performance, he has now hit safely in seven of his last eight games.
Red Sox 4, Firebirds 0
Bryce Robison scattered just four hits across six scoreless innings to lead Y-D over Orleans.
Robison (1-0) walked two and struck out three before handing things over to Luke Jewett, who notched a nine-out save. Six different players recorded a hit for the Birds, with Travis Honeyman’s double in the third being the offensive highlight of the night for Orleans.
Hunter Haas paced the Red Sox offense, going 2-for-4 with a run. Yarmouth-Dennis has been rolling as of late, winning eight of its last 10.
Harbor Hawks 6, Gatemen 1
Justin Janas and Dominic Pitelli each drove in two runs as Hyannis cruised past Wareham to win its fourth straight game.
Janas had an RBI single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Pitelli singled home a pair of runs in the sixth. Starter Magdiel Cotto surrendered two hits and a walk while fanning three in four innings, and Austin Strickland (1-1) provided three innings out of the bullpen to record the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out one.
Hogan Windish and Max Anderson doubled for the Gatemen, who are just 3-7 over their last 10 games.
Mariners 4, Kettleers 4
Graham Pauley had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to allow Harwich to tie with Cotuit at Whitehouse Field.
The Ketts had taken a 4-2 lead just an inning earlier when Kyle Karros grounded out to bring home Carter Trice, who singled to lead off the inning. Zachary Cole later scored on a wild pitch, but Cotuit’s lead wouldn’t last for long.
Chris Newell homered and scored twice for the Mariners, and Pauley finished with two hits. Ryan Ritter led Cotuit, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and a run.
Commodores 0, Whitecaps 0
Despite combining for 13 hits, neither team was able to bring a run home as Falmouth and Brewster finished in a scoreless draw.
The Caps nearly broke through with one out in the eighth when Trevor Werner singled and David Mendham followed with a double. Reliever Ryan Slater would get Parks Harber and Grayson Tatrow to ground out, though, preserving the shutout.
‘Dores starter Chase Jeter gave up three hits and struck out two through four innings of work, while Brewster starter Zane Morehouse tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and one walk. He struck out four.
