Cape Cod League roundup: June 14
Ketts bend but don't break, McGraw throws a gem and Sullivan dazzles in relief
Kettleers 6, Braves 4
Victor Scott II hit a two-run homer and Chandler Simpson reached base four times as Cotuit edged Bourne in a rematch of last season’s first-round playoff matchup.
Scott’s blast gave the Ketts the lead in the seventh after they had tied things at 4-4 earlier in the frame when Simpson, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, crossed home on a fielder’s choice.
The Braves had a three-run inning of their own in the fourth behind a two-RBI base hit from Ryan Proto that came a couple batters after Chris Brito had scored on an error. Cotuit’s pitching staff had thrown 21 shutout innings to open the season prior to the surge.
Bourne starter Seth Keener allowed just two hits through his first three innings of work, but was chased from the game in the fourth after 2/3 of an inning.
Whitecaps 3, Red Sox 1
Teddy McGraw allowed just one run across six innings of work as Brewster defeated Y-D to earn back-to-back wins.
McGraw (1-0) surrendered just three hits and one walk while striking out eight to pick up his first win of the season. After giving up two hits and the lone run of his outing in the first inning, the right-hander went on to retire 15 of the next 17 batters he faced.
Alex Freeland got the Whitecaps’ offense going early, hitting a solo home run on the third pitch of the game. Grayson Tatrow added an RBI double just two innings later, while Cole Carrigg had his third consecutive multi-hit game for the Red Sox.
Mariners 4, Commodores 1
Danny Corona went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Liam Sullivan tossed three innings of one-hit relief as Harwich bested Falmouth at Whitehouse Field.
Sullivan (1-0) did not allow a run or a walk, and struck out five in his first appearance of the summer. Field manager Steve Englert turned to Zane Probst for the seventh, and the right-hander went 1 2/3 innings before Jaden Woods set down the final four Commodores in order to notch the save.
The ‘Dores scratched across just three hits, one of which was Angelo D’Acunto’s double in the seventh. Alex Mooney and Justin Jordan each added a single.
Orleans 2, Wareham 0
Sam Conte, Josh Allen and Ben Shields combined to pitch six innings of one-hit baseball out of the bullpen as Orleans blanked Wareham.
Allen (1-0) earned the win, Shields picked up the save and the trio struck out five Gatemen. Jacob Wilson led the Birds’ offense with an RBI single and a walk, and Jacob Stinson also picked up an RBI on a groundout to first.
Wareham’s offense has struggled in the early going, plating just four runs through three games, the second-fewest on the Cape.
Harbor Hawks 1, Anglers 1
Marcus Brown doubled home Cooper Ingle in the bottom of the first, but Chatham was held scoreless for the remainder of the game as it tied with Hyannis to close its three-game homestand.
Starters Austin Amaral (HYA) and Ben Hampton (CHA) allowed the only runs of the contest. Hawks reliever Brandon Llewellyn was particularly impressive, recording all six of his outs by way of the strikeout.
Chatham’s Nate Nankil was the only player on either side to pick up a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
