On Monday afternoon, the Bruins crossed off an important item on their offseason checklist. They signed Trent Frederic to a two-year extension worth $ 4.6 million and avoided an arbitration hearing. With his contract settled, Frederic can focus on building on his recent success.
During the 2022-2023 campaign, the St. Louis native took his game to another level. In 79 games, he recorded a career-high 17 goals and 31 points. As he proved to be a weapon offensively, Frederic came through in the clutch with six game-winning goals. He only had four through his first 119 NHL games.
As the Bruins rewrote the record books, Fredric was critical to their success. Unlike in years past, he didn't just make an impact by throwing his body around. Frederic was more aggressive in the offensive zone and landed a career-high 120 shots on goal. As a result, the Bruins rewarded his efforts.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Frederic's new deal comes with an annual cap hit of $2.3 million. On Sunday, Friedman reported that Frederic and the Bruins were $1.5 million apart in their arbitration filings. They have avoided what can sometimes be brutally honest hearings by finding common ground.
After an offseason full of change, agreeing on a new deal with the 2016 draftee was key. Over the last few months, Patrice Bergeron retired, Tyler Bertuzzi left in free agency and Taylor Hall was traded. The Bruins will need Frederic to show that his increased production was no fluke to replace their offense.
That is no concern for his teammates, such as Charlie Coyle, who have seen his development up close.
“I love [Frederic],” Coyle told 98.5 The Sports Hub. “I love playing with him. He’s such a great kid. Great teammate. I really love him as a player. He’s only getting better and better. You can see the strides he’s taken, the confidence that he’s built, and it’s great to see. You can just tell every day he’s working on his game. He’s doing this. He’s getting more confident each day.”
As the Bruins prepare for the 2023-2024 campaign, Frederic will again be looking to make the Bruins bottom six a strength as he continues to improve his game.
