In the opening hours of free agency, the Bruins were one of the busiest teams in the NHL. Boston focused on improving its depth and brought in a few intriguing pieces, such as Morgan Geekie. After stints with the Hurricanes and Kraken, the former third-round pick will call Boston home for the next two years.
Geekie joins the Bruins after recording a career-high 28 points during the 2022-2023 campaign. In his second season with the Kraken, the 24-year-old dished out 19 assists while finding the back of the net nine times. He also came through in clutch situations with three game-winning goals. Geekie was able to carry his success into the postseason.
During the Kraken’s playoff run, the Canadian native added four points to his resume. In his 11 previous playoff games, he only had one goal. While Geekie has steadily improved offensively every year, he is unafraid of throwing his body around. That is a trait that will be valuable to the Bruins.
Through the first 142 games of his NHL career, Geekie has landed 137 hits and blocked 66 shots. He also has 60 takeaways during that span. The 2017 draftee is expected to spend most of his time in the bottom six, where he will provide a boost with his strength and occasional offensive.
With Geekie on board with a cap hit of $ 2 million, the Bruins will be looking to fill out their roster with veterans on similar deals. They still have limited cap space and could create more by dealing veterans like Linus Ullmark. However, adding Geekie fills one hole as the Bruins retool their roster for a return to the postseason.
