The Boston Bruins have made a notable trade before the NHL trade deadline on March 1st.
Boston acquires right winger Garnet Hathaway and defenseman Dmitry Orlov. In exchange, the Bruins will send forward Craig Smith, 2023 first round pick this year, a 2024 third round pick, and 2025 second rounder back to the Caps.
Giving up a first round pick is always costly, but this move will add a physical presence for a deep Stanley Cup run.
Hathaway has 198 hits which would lead the Bruins this season.
The 31-year-old Orlov is an experienced left-hand defenseman who has spent his entire career with the Washington Capitals. Given the success of the Capitals in recent season, Orlov has played in a total of 74 games dating back to the 2015-2016 season.
In terms of roles, Hathaway is likely to take the place of Smith on the third line that currently includes Taylor Hall on the left and Charlie Coyle at center.
For Orlov there are multiple options for head coach Jim Montgomery as he could have him on the left side with Charlie McAvoy. He could drop Matt Grzelcyk down to the third pair with Connor Clifton. Another option is have Orlov on the third pair and take Derek Forbort out.
The Bruins take to the ice against the Seattle Kraken tonight to start a four game west coast trip. The road trip put the Bruins to a test as they are riding a four game winning streak.
