Brayan Bello throws off the mound on Sunday
Red Sox righty Brayan Bello threw a bullpen session on Sunday from JetBlue Park. This was his first off the mound since the 23-year-old was shutdown earlier in camp.
Bello threw 20 pitches and according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, the young hurler “seemed like he was back to normal, free and easy.”
When Bello was initially shutdown, manager Alex Cora didn’t seem overly concerned.
“Nothing to alarm, but obviously, he’s so important to the organization... He’s important for what we’re trying to accomplish,” said Cora.
The expectation is Bello will be ready for Opening Day. However, Bello and the team will need to see how he responds following this bullpen and other throwing sessions.
“I’m just trying to stretch my arm and trying to get it stretched enough so I can start the bullpens (again),” Bello said through translator Carlos Villoria Benítez.
“Of course I’m ready. The (tightness) that set me back, it wasn’t that much of a time,” Bello told MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “So for me, I’m ready, hopefully, to be the No. 5 starter in that rotation.”
The right-handed hurler will continue to compete this camp and focus on getting healthy.
“I feel way better than last year. I feel more prepared,” Bello said. “I know I’m competing with other pitchers for a spot in the starting rotation. For me, that’s my goal. My goal is to try to make the team out of camp as a starter.”
Bello made 13 appearances last season, 11 for starts is expecting to be a part of the Red Sox rotation in 2023.
