Brayan Bello strong in second rehab start, feels 100 percent healthy
Brayan Bello dominated the Columbus Clippers in his second rehab start for the WooSox.
The 23-year-old right-hander struck out four, scattered four hits and no walks, and threw 81 pitches, 50 for strikes.
Tuesday night’s start appears to be Bello’s final tune up before rejoining the Red Sox rotation this weekend.
He told reporters following his start that he feels 100 percent healthy.
“I felt good,” Bello said through translator Jesus Quinonez of Telemundo. “I was just trying to throw all the pitches in the strike zone, trying to throw quality pitches and everything went well.”
Bello mixed his pitches well to keep the Clippers offense guessing. His only mistake was allowing a solo home run to right off the bat of cleanup hitter Zack Collins.
“He was pretty darn good,” said WooSox manager Chad Tracy on Bello’s start. “His velocity was there, sinker looked good, he threw some really good breaking balls. He threw a lot of devastating breaking balls, I thought he was awesome.”
The righty saw his sinker top out at 97 mph and he also featured a new pitch he’s been working on.
“I felt my velo was good and I was also throwing a pitch that I’ve been practicing in the last couple days, a curve,” Bello said. “I feel good. My body feels good. I’m just trying to do the same work and try to rehabilitate well and try to put in the work so this doesn’t happen again.”
Bello expects to rejoin the Red Sox this weekend when the team welcomes the Angels to town. We asked Bello about the possibility of facing superstar Shohei Ohtani for the first time, Bello gave a little smile, laughed and shrugged.
