Brayan Bello pitches four innings his Red Sox debut
Bello’s debuts didn’t go to plan for Red Sox fans
The much-anticipated debut on the Red Sox No. 1 prospect has come and gone. Brayan Bello has posted some outstanding numbers thus far working his way up with Double-A Portland having a 1.60 ERA and with Triple-A Worcester where he had a 2.81 ERA.
Red Sox fans have been able to watch him come through the minors at a speedy rate this spring. From pitching a no-hitter through seven in early May to being called up this week. He’s been the buzz around the Red Sox faithful even drawing comparisons to Pedro Matinez.
However, Wednesday evening it seemed clear Bello had some major-league jitters starting the first inning. He was just a bit shaky giving up a few hard-hit balls and working fast before finally slowing down.
Bello finished Wednesday’s game with a stat line of 4.0 innings pitched, six hits, four earned runs and two strikeouts. He finished the day throwing 79 pitches, 45 of which were strikes running a high count trying to pitch out of early jams.
Bello relied heavily on his changeup and in the process he failed to control the pitch.
Prior to the game, Alex Cora said “If it’s three innings and five runs, that doesn’t mean he’s going to fail at this level.”
Cora said it best, Red Sox fans can overreact sometimes. No need to worry Red Sox fans! Even the greatest have struggled in their debuts and let’s not forget its not necessarily easy to play let alone make your debut in front of the Fenway Faithful.
