Brayan Bello likely to pitch on Marathon Monday
Brayan Bello is set to make his 2023 debut on Patriot’s Day on Monday. He will pitch against Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani.
“There’s a good chance it will be Monday,” manager Alex Cora said Friday about when righty will start.
Bello began the season on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm tightness during spring training.
The young right-hander made a rehab start on Tuesday for the WooSox, where his sinker topped out 97 mph.
“I felt good,” Bello said through translator Jesus Quinonez of Telemundo. “I was just trying to throw all the pitches in the strike zone, trying to throw quality pitches and everything went well.”
Bello mixed his pitches well including a new pitch, a curveball that he wants to add to his pitching repertoire.
“I felt my velo was good and I was also throwing a pitch that I’ve been practicing in the last couple days, a curve,” Bello said. “I feel good. My body feels good. I’m just trying to do the same work and try to rehabilitate well and try to put in the work so this doesn’t happen again.”
The 23-year-old will square off against Ohtani on Monday. When asked what it’ll be like to face one of the greatest players in baseball, Bello gave a little smile, laughed and shrugged.
