Brayan Bello is expected to make his spring debut on Sunday
Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello is expected to make his spring training debut on Sunday in relief against the Phillies. He is expected to pitch a couple of innings in relief of Nick Pivetta.
During the first week of camp, Bello was shut down after experiencing right forearm tightness.
The 23-year-old threw live batting practice with Garrett Whitlock on March 11. Both pitchers had a clean session, that led to Whitlock making his debut against the Rays on Wednesday. Bello threw two innings on the backfields the same day Whitlock made his debut..
Bello has been focused on getting his arm strength back to rejoin the Red Sox rotation. It’s likely he will begin the season on the injured list as he works to get back on schedule.
“I’m just trying to stretch my arm and trying to get it stretched enough so I can start the bullpens (again),” Bello said through translator Carlos Villoria Benítez.
“Of course I’m ready. The (tightness) that set me back, it wasn’t that much of a time,” Bello told MassLive’s Christopher Smith in February. “So for me, I’m ready, hopefully, to be the No. 5 starter in that rotation.”
The right-handed hurler will continue to compete this camp and focus on getting healthy.
“I feel way better than last year. I feel more prepared,” Bello said. “I know I’m competing with other pitchers for a spot in the starting rotation. For me, that’s my goal. My goal is to try to make the team out of camp as a starter.”
