Brad Marchand makes history in Bruins loss to Avalanche
On Monday night, Brad Marchand continued to climb the franchise record books in the Bruins 4-3 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche. While the Bruins only recorded one point, Marchand was a bright spot as he passed a franchise legend.
The Bruins got on the board first with Marchand’s 16th goal of the season. The goal also gave the Halifax native 898 career points, tying him with Rick Middleton for fifth most in franchise history. However, the former third-round pick did not stop there as he forced overtime with his second goal of the night in the third period, giving him 899 career points.
Although Marchand would have preferred to leave Colorado with a win, ranking fifth in franchise history in points is no small accomplishment. The only players ahead of him are Ray Bourque, Johnny Bucyk, Patrice Bergeron and Phil Esposito. Marchand is far from done and only needs 113 points to tie Esposito.
While the Bruins captain has taken on a new role this season, he has continued to be a consistent source of offense. In 39 games, he has recorded 37 points and added 13 power play assists to his resume. David Pastrnak is the only one on the team with more points and assists.
However, Marchand’s impact goes beyond the stat sheet. Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman highlighted that when talking with the media on Monday night. When asked about Marchand’s impact, Swayman told NESN, “ I think it’s really special and it just shows our leadership. March putting us on his back and not taking no for answer.”
As the games continue to pile up, Marchand’s importance won’t change and a few more milestones could be on the horizon.
